How to Improve Your English Pronunciation, Part 2
Regardless of your age, you can always work on your pronunciation. Our mini session of today is to help non-native speakers improve their competence in pronunciation by focussing on one sound (actually two)–the TH. This sound is unique to English; therefore, the English student will always try to replace this sound by either T or S. Some students may object by saying that they are too old to change for the better. We have living proof that one of our TEFL trainees from the U.K. was able to teach a Russian lady beyond 50 how to form this sound properly within a week of daily practice. If she could do it, you can do it. INTRODUCTION Please watch this video and see for yourself what can happen if your pronunciation is incorrect. Maybe you are thinking about your pronunciation of the TH right now. Don’t worry. If you stay with…
How to Improve Your English Pronunciation, Part 1
Can I, as a non-native speaker, greatly improve the way I pronounce English? The answer is, “Yes, you can.” It doesn’t come in an hour though. It takes some time to work on it. If you live in a country in which English is spoken, you will see results a little faster. If you live in a non-English-speaking country, it may take some more time to achieve the desired changes. Just thinking about them will not get you anywhere. Action creates results. So for all those who would love to speak a more native-like accent in English, we have created this six-part program to help you focus on what’s important. Through my work as a teacher, I meet many immigrants. Adults often struggle to acquire English; children seem to have no problem, and they acquire a native-like accent rather quickly. A lot of people then say that children learn…
What English is the Original English–British or American?
Some time ago, I asked Americans why they speak English differently. None of the people who were present knew the answer. “We probably messed it up over the years.”, said one of them finally. Over all these years, one line of a famous American poem has stayed in my ears. “…, and the Americans are worst of all because they speak it wrong.” I started doing some research, and this is what I found out. When I grew up, I decided to become an English teacher. I studied at the Department of Applied Linguistics. Besides methodology, classroom management and phonology, we also got a thorough insight into American literature. We talked about American poetry. There was one poet who I particularly liked and still like—Odgen Nash. I always found the following poem very funny. England Expects by Ogden Nash Let us pause to consider the English. Who when they pause…
