WORK IN TUNISIA AS A TEFL TEACHER

Teaching English in public schools seems to be a little bit difficult due to the regulations. Teaching English in higher education, especially if you have MA or PhD, is much easier. Yet, in Tunisia we have a growing number of international schools which hire local or foreign teachers alike. A TEFL certificate is considered a powerful qualification if you want to get a job quicker and easier. Salaries depend on the qualifications. Frankly speaking, they are not as high as compared to European and North American countries. Looking at the living standard in Tunisia; however, they are acceptable, and teaching English is considered one of the good jobs.

Options for Teaching English in Tunisia
Teaching in Tunisia is possible in both international schools and language centers. Qualified, experienced teachers can apply to teach in British or American international schools, which require candidates to have a teaching credential and usually a minimum of two years of experience. For individuals looking to teach English in Tunisia, there are many teaching opportunities in language centers throughout the country, although the city of Tunis has the highest concentration of these centers.

Salary and Benefits for English Teachers in Tunisia
Teachers in international schools can often expect a salary of $2,000 – $2,500 USD per month, tax free. Teachers have vacations three times a year: winter vacation (15 days mid-December), spring vacation (15 days mid-March), and summer vacation (two months/July and August). Vacations are paid. In addition, schools provide generous benefits packages that usually include accommodation, round-trip flights, and medical insurance. Language centers do not typically offer the same benefits, but still provide vacation and a tax-free salary that allows teachers to live comfortably.

Hiring Time for English Teachers
Most hiring for teaching jobs in international schools in Tunisia takes place from March-July for positions beginning in September. Schools often conduct a second round of mid-year hiring in order to bring teachers over in January as well. If you intend to work in a language center, they hire year round—whenever they are in need.

Prerequisites for Teaching in Tunisia
Foreign teachers need to have a work permit. To apply for that in your home country, you must have a BA/BS and an iTTi TEFL Certificate with Teaching Practicum. Your prospective school must support you with the visa application paperwork just like it is in other countries. As ads usually ask for teaching experience, register for an in-class TEFL program with actual student teaching. If you are a non-native speaker, your level of English must be perfect. What is perfect? Level C1 or C2—not only in speaking but also in writing. If you are unsure, take our free proficiency test and learn how you can improve your performance if required.
