OUR iTTi LAGOS TEFL INSTITUTE
work in lagos as a tefl TEACHER
Most of the demand for teachers in the public education system falls within the elementary schools. Only 32% of males and 27% of females go through middle or even high school education due to the poor infrastructure, poverty and lack of qualified teachers.
It may be somewhat of a challenge to go through the Nigerian Ministry of Education to find a teaching position, but there is no doubt that Nigeria could need a little help from international teachers. Private International Schools:
It is much easier to find a teaching position with a private educational institution because you don’t have to go through the application process of the Ministry of Education. While the demands of different institutions may vary, most international teachers will be expected to teach English classes and possess a teaching credential such as the TEFL certificate. Some teachers also teach privately as tutors to supplement their income. Volunteer Work:
There are many orphanages and non-profit organizations in Nigeria which are constantly looking for international volunteers to teach local children in need. Since these teaching opportunities are done on a volunteer basis, organizations often only require volunteers to have a high school diploma as well as the heart to help some of the least fortunate citizens of Nigeria. How to Look for Teaching Jobs:
The best way to look for a teaching opportunity in Nigeria is to apply to a teaching program that can arrange specific teaching placements with local education institutions. Peak hiring time in Nigeria is August–just before the school starts. Our training center in Lagos will be able to assist those who wish to teach in Nigeria with the proper guidance and support. Required Qualifications:
Since most teach-aboad jobs in Nigeria are offered through private schools, the educational requirements may vary With a Bachelor’s degree in a subject area and a TEFL certificate, you will be well on your way to landing a rewarding teaching position in one of Nigeria’s private schools. For those planning to teach in a public school, the Nigerian Ministry of Education requires all candidates to have a Bachelor’s degree in education or in a specific subject area. Teacher Compensation:
50,000 Nigerian Naira per month; due to the lack of funding, public school teachers in Nigeria earn much less than private school teachers (70,000 Naira/month). As a teacher of a private international school, you may go home with double the amount in your pockets–150,000 Naira per month. Do not let this worry you too much. Many teach-abroad programs will provide you with a salary that you can live on and not be dependent on the Nigerian government’s budget. Volunteer teachers are usually provided with room and board and some pocket money while teaching in Nigeria. Average Cost of Living:
The average cost of living in Nigeria is actually quite high compared to other African countries. Nigeria’s two largest cities, Lagos and Abuja, are two of the most expensive places to live in the world. Still, the majority of Nigerians survive on 1 USD per day. This simply shows the huge contrast between the wealthy and the poor. Chances are, you will live comfortably during your time in Nigeria. The average cost of living is estimated with 50,000 Naira per month. Below are some examples of prices in Nigeria. Since the conversion rate between the Nigerian Naira to the USD is 1 to 0.01, the prices are show in USD to better illustrate them.
